bopping along

Here’s a sweet video of an curious little yellow robot called KEEPON, which was designed by a Japanese professor, Hideki Kozima.

“In the context of Kozima’s “Infanoid” project, Keepon has been used to study the underlying mechanisms of social communication. Its simple appearance and behavior are intended to help children, even those with developmental disorders such as autism, to understand its attentive and emotive actions.”

Upcycling – 7 Deadly Sins x Amy Winehouse

Hello hello hello!

Embarking on a new project is always exciting, especially if it’s the first one to start off your year. In ND Art + Design it’s four week projects instead of BTEC First’s three. Still super fast paced  but really enjoying it – time srsly flies by when you’re having a grand old time.

A “guinea pig” new trial theme we were given was based on UPCYCLING. Basically, (for those who are too lazy to click the link) it’s turning what could be ugly and defunct items with little or no use into something beautiful and functional. It’s like recycling, but groovier!

Recycling – converting + breaking down old materials into something new (like how styrofoam drinking cups can be turned into wee pencils)
Upcycling – using what you’ve already got and making it super duper gnarly.

Without further ado! OOOOH and AAAAH over pictures:

If you’ve reached to the bottom and are still reading, you get a shiny golden origami paper star full of MAGICAL WISHES!

My personal theme was based on the *~* 7 Deadly Sins. I decided to whittle it down to one Sin – GREED. From my original item I brought in for the project – which was the cassette tape, I plucked out ideas such as music, artists and lyrics. I had previously drawn Amy Winehouse before and decided to further improve and expand on my illustration to work into this project.
I found some plain white plates and a clear (slightly greasy) vase from my cupboard at home. Nothing a bit of vinegar and elbow grease can’t sort oot.
Added some chain at the end from an old necklace for oomph – that’s four things I upcycled for this project. Nifty!

I’ve learnt a few things from this project:
[!] Double check EVERYTHING before you print on expensive special decal transfer paper, because chances are, you will get it wrong at least once. Or twice. Um!
[!] If you use real cigarettes, dip them in clear varnish to retain the look and authenticity but NOT THE MINGIN’ STALE SMOKE SMELL. Duly noted, pip pip!
Cover any gaps from vase (filled with junk) + cassette tape with strong glue.

Presentation went swimmingly well and I received positive feedback, I had filled the brief well and apparently some people would like to purchase/are interested in future plate/dirty dishes endeavours. Aye!

Tally ho for now,

birthday commission – siobhan

I was recently commissioned by a friend of a friend, Chris, for a special birthday piece for his girlfriend. The original request was to create a personalised portrait piece*** inspired by a great scene in Pulp Fiction:

With a few quick emails sent back and forth, I knew that a 1950’s/rockabilly style would suit this piece perfectly. I tried to make this piece reflect her quirky personality ~ it was oodles of fun splashing around the inks!

Mediums used: Inks, glitter, paint, coloured pencils

Wot’s new with me .. my 2nd year at college studying Art + Design has started up again, so far it’s been exciting, fast paced and as smooth as pulp free orange juice. FINALLY got a bus travel card (saving £400 each year, yesplz) only to find it malfunctioned one week later. Shaking my fists at Lothian buses! Discovered a new found love for jasmine perfumes (“You smell like a granny!” “Well, then I smell like one sensual granny!”), painting my nails with ridiculous designs (pandas + beetlejuice stripes anyone?) consuming far too much coffee thanks to the new Starbucks stand at collegio, attended a (surprisingly super fun) Chinese wedding party with my best friend and took an insane amount of ridonkulous photos with my cousins. (Hello Celine + Ivy if you’re reading! 😉

Toodlepip for now!

Portrait of Little H

I’m overwhelmed by the kind people who are interested enough in my art work to have requested commissioned personal pieces for them. I am one delighted lady! I’ll be one busy bee this summer, steadily working on several pieces.

Here is one piece I finished recently, commissioned by my besty (Beeks) for her mother’s belated birthday present. It’s a portrait of her young sister, Hannah. She’s as cute as a button!

I had a lot of great reference pictures provided by Beeks, which I pulled different pieces, poses and facial expressions from to create this piece. I feel really made this portrait successful – here’s hoping Beek’s mum likes it!
